there’s a hum in my humanness.

My mother’s favourite bird is also the bird that seemingly paused for a moment to greet me at the greenhouse following the phone call, provinces apart, that my garden and bird loving aunt had died. This is also the bird I had mistaken for an Aboriginal inspired Canadian Geese painting by my favourite artist. The art provoked my business name, is inked on my back and the artist is my facebook friend. The same bird I remember waiting for as a child to arrive at the feeder through the cottage window, hearing the subtle buzz of tireless wings, never staying long enough to please my eyes.

‘The hummingbird spirit animal symbolizes the enjoyment of life and lightness of being. Those who have the hummingbird as a totem are invited to enjoy the sweetness of life, lift up negativity wherever it creeps in and express love more fully in their daily endeavors. This fascinating bird is capable of the most amazing feats despite its small size, such as traveling great distances or being able to fly backwards. By affinity with the hummingbird, those who have this bird as totem may be encouraged to develop their adaptability and resiliency while keeping a playful and optimistic outlook.’ – Elena Harris,

The hummingbird invites you and I to absorb life’s sweet nectar among the troubled and the kind. To swiftly move in life, perhaps altering directions yet receptive to challenge and change with flexibility even with what’s unexpected.

The hummingbird uses a lot of energy requiring frequent nourishment. Slowing down to keep up; a mantra in the human reflection of cultivating our inner hummingbird. Honing our energies for what resources are abundantly good in our lives is the song of this bird as opposed to the fluttering frittering over worry, anger, or disappointment.

An eloquent bird with delight in their being, they will travel known as far as 2000 miles to reach their destination. Are we in pursuit of our dreams? Are we flexible to the path that takes us there? Do we realize our grand potential among our smallness?

I believe each life encounter is marked like treasure on a map. It is in our vibration to freely marvel in the mystery of our lives, extracting sweet awareness from all that we experience.
